Do you experience numbness, tingling and pain in the your wrist and hand? Are you constantly shaking your hands to get rid of the sensation of pins and needles? Does your wrist and hand feel weak? Struggling to hold a cup of tea due to pain in your wrist and hands? Been diagnosed as having Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a condition characterised by pain, tingling and numbness in your hand and wrist making it hard for you to use your hands to grasp and hold objects.
Signs and symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndome
- Tingling and numbness in the affected hand
- Aggravation of symptoms with gripping and use of hands
- Shaking or flicking hands tends to relief pain temporarily
- Pain around the wrist, forearm and hand
The carpal tunnel is the space in your wrist which has the tendons, blood vessels and nerves responsible for movement and sensation of your fingers, hand and wrist.
When the tendons in the carpal tunnel become inflammed from overuse, they swell up and take up more space in the carpal tunnel. As a result the nerves and blood vessels that are within the carpal tunnel space become compressed causing irritation leading to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
Often people ignore the aches and pain in their wrist and continue with their daily lives. However it gradually becomes worse and gets too severe to the point where they struggle with daily tasks and wake up during the night due to numbness and pain in their hands. People are then often referred to surgeons who recommend surgery to release the pressure in the carpal tunnel space. Unfortunately surgery is not always the best option as most people tend to relapse after surgery when they return to their normal work activities. Surgery also requires post surgery rehab to manage the swelling, scar tissue and to retain moment and strength in the wrist and hand.
The great news is surgery is not necessary and an expert physiotherapist can effectively treat and provide relief for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. As Physio Ready our physiotherapists will provide the best management and treatment for your Carpal Tunnel Syndrome without the need for surgery.
