Do you experience a lack of clarity, fogginess or difficulty concentrating?
Did you know that these symptoms can be coming from the neck and poor ocular (eye) motor control?
Here at Physio Ready we see many people for their headaches and associated symptoms.
A lack of clarity and fogginess while reading, walking, or driving is a common complaint that gets brought up often, but it is also poorly managed and diagnosed.
People will say they have seen the ENT specialist, the optometrist and even the neurologist but often finding little to no answers for their symptoms.
This is because in majority of the cases the assessment and treatment of the upper joints of the neck and ocular motor control is excluded.
How do the upper joints of the neck contribute to lack of clarity, fogginess and difficulty concentrating?
In our body we have a structure known as the brainstem. The brainstem plays a vital role in relaying signals from our brain to our body and vice versa. When our upper joints of the neck have a disorder due to long term postural issues or direct trauma it will constantly signal to our brainstem that something is not right. This in the short term can be okay however if it persists eventually the brainstem becomes overloaded with signals and the brain will interpret this as an issue. To protect the body, the brain will then produce symptoms such as lack of clarity, fogginess and difficulty concentrating to let our body know that something must be done. However, the issue is therapists often miss the upper joints of the neck as a source of these symptoms and only focus on the vision, ear, and brain.
How does Ocular Motor Control contribute to lack of clarity, fogginess and difficulty concentrating?
Ocular motor control is the ability to focus and track an object with your eyes. It has nothing to do with actual vision as it is more about the control component of our eyes and neck. When someone has poor ability to focus and track an object while it is moving, or when they are moving the brain interprets the signals being sent from the ocular motor nerves poorly and becomes confused. When the brain is confused, it will start to send signals to our body to let us know that something is wrong. These signals come in the form of lack of clarity, fogginess and difficulty concentrating.
